Barefoot Architecture: a
Swedish example
by Rod Hackney & Tia
Kansara
Kansara Hackney Ltd (KH)
aims to alleviate poverty through community 'barefoot' architecture, which
began when one of the two directors, Dr Rod Hackney, realised that the root of
the sustainability debate lay in tapping neglected human potential. To satisfy
the UN-Habitat alleviation of slum conditions, KH involves local slum dwellers
with professional enablers, who live and work within the shantytowns, through a
self-help programme of renovation and social improvement.
The slum-energising
programme began in 1971 with Dr Hackney’s house in Black Road, which like 1.5
million other UK homes, was classified by the government as a slum and
"unfit for human habitation". Community 'barefoot' Architecture’s
role in resisting the inevitable demolition of houses and championing of an
alternative sustainable self-build programme, involves all slum residents.
Tia Kansara is an
award-winning director of Kansara Hackney Ltd. In 2010, she wrote the brief and
appointed the architects Foster+Partners for SAMBA‘s multi-million dollar
headquarters, as the first female to judge a LEED platinum building in Saudi
Arabia. She’s on London Business School Global Energy Summit’s executive
committee, Co-director of the international CleanTechChallenge, the Gulf
ambassador of the UCL Bartlett, Siemen’s list of Future Influencers and Global
Ambassador of the Sandbox Network. Currently completing her Ph.D. at the
Bartlett, University College London on designing future cities whilst creating
the first energy baseline in the Gulf.

A2, Östermalmsgatan 26
WXCA startade 2007
öppna tävlingen Baltic Sea Art Park in Estonia. WXCA kommer till Stockholm
och föreläser om sina projekt och designmetodik.

Arkitekturskolan, Entrén, Östermalmsgatan 26
Adam Fure leder
kontoret SIFT Studio och undervisar vid University of Michigan i Ann Arbor,
USA.

Genus loci - kvinnor i arkitekturen
Tisdag 18 februari
Talare: Mia Hägg, Habiter Autrement Rahel Belatchew Lerdell, Belatchew Arkitekter Inga Varg, Rosenbergs Arkitekter Pye Aurell Ehrström och Susanne Ramel, Marge Arkitekter Ylva Frid, Spridd Emma Jonsteg, Utopia Arkitekter Petra Gipp, Petra Gipp Arkitektur Moderatorer: Julie Cirelli, Arvinius förlag, och Salka Hallström Bornold, Form |

Tips: föreläsning Daniel Norell & Einar Rodhe, Norell/Rodhe, Stockholm, Feb. 11, 17:00, KTH School of Architecture, Room A3
The seventh and final open lecture in the series Architectural Technology
invites Daniel Norell and Einar Rodhe, faculty of KTH Arkitekturskolan as
well as Chalmers Architecture in Gothenburg.
Norell/Rodhe is a Stockholm based architecture studio founded in 2012 by Daniel Norell and Einar Rodhe. Their work ranges from speculative academic research and installations to buildings and landscapes. They recently completed their first solo exhibition “Erratic” at ADD, the Aalto University Digital Design Laboratory in Helsinki. Previously, they have presented their research in conferences at MIT in Boston and the CCA in San Francisco. Erratic was funded by FORMAS through the Strong Research Environment Architecture in the Making.

KTH School of Architecture - Architectural Technology Lectures Series: Design & Research
What is research in the realm of architectural design?
Novel technologies, materials and fabrication methods constantly enter the field of architecture. However, these innovations can only contribute to the discipline if they are integrated into a coherent process from design to production. In recent years many architects conducted extensive research and significantly contributed to technological innovations. The development of parametric design and simulation tools through a global open source community or a novel interpretation of the use of industrial robots exemplifies the power of design thinking. This lecture series features PhD students and researchers from practice and international leading research groups. They will present and discuss their view on research within the field of design and talk about projects, research tools and methodologies.

The lecture series is organised by Oliver Tessmann, Assistant Professor at the KTH School of Architecture. The event is funded by the FORMAS through the Strong Research Environment Architecture in the Making
