RIGHT TO THE CITY – Yvonne P. Doderer

If urban space is understood not only in the sense of physical and built space but – following the French philosopher Henri Lefebvre – as societal, emancipatory, political and sociocritical space, movements like the feminist as well as the lgbtqi movement can be described and analyzed as a highly urban phenomenon. These movements contribute to the productivity of cities and to urban ways of living. An example is the "spatialization" of the feminist and lgbtqi-movement in German cities. Furthermore, the notion of a right to the city can be updated in the frame of gender studies and feminist practice: in consideration of the contemporary and global economical, societal and ecological developments, the demand of a right to the city is necessary more than ever and can function as an umbrella term for changes and a livable future.Yvonne P. Doderer is an architect, urban researcher and Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf. She runs the"Office of Transdisciplinary Research and Cultural Production" in Stuttgart and is internationally active as lecturer, author and producer mainly in the artistic field. Doderer studied architecture at the Technical University in Stuttgart.After the lecture, Thérèse Kristiansson will have a talk with Yvonne P. Doderer about a right to the city for livable futures.

Antón García-Abril, born in Madrid, 1969 is a European PhD Architect and associate professor in the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. In 2000 he establishes ENSAMBLE STUDIO. He has been invited professor at the M.I.T. in 2011. His office has been recently selected by SANAA to participate in the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. There is a constant research work in his projects which are exposed structures that explore the essence of materials to create space. The Music Studies Center and the SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela, the Martemar House in Malaga, the Hemeroscopium House in Madrid and more recently The Truffle in Costa da Morte Spain.

Stan Allen is an American architect, theorist and dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University. He received a B.A. from Brown University, a B.Arch. from the Cooper Union and an M.Arch. from Princeton University and has worked in the offices of Richard Meier and Rafael Moneo. He was formerly the director, with landscape architect James Corner, of Field Operations. His practice, Stan Allen Architect, is based in Brooklyn.

Responding to the complexity of the modern city, Allen has developed an extensive catalogue of urbanistic strategies, in particular looking at field theory, landscape architecture and ecology as models to revitalize the practices of urban design. His urban projects have been published in Points and Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1999) and his theoretical essays in Practice: Architecture, Technique and Representation, published in 2000 by G+B Arts in their Critical Voices series. A revised edition of this book was published in 2009 by Routledge.

He lectures and publishes extensively, both in the U.S. and abroad, and participates in numerous international design conferences and symposia. In addition to design awards and competition prizes, Allen has been awarded Fellowships in Architecture from the New York Foundation for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts, a Design Arts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Graham Foundation Grant, and a President's Citation from The Cooper Union in 2002.Prior to his move to Princeton in 2002, Allen directed the AAD (Advanced Architectural Design) Program at Columbia University's GSAPP.
