Willem Jan Neutelings, Rotterdam , Holland. Startade Neutelings Riedijk Architecten 1992 tillsammans med Michiel Riedijk. Neutelings Riedijks byggnader utstrålar både humor och humanism. Kontoret skapar ett slags ikonografisk arkitektur där byggnaden ser ut att börja i en bild, samtidigt som innehållet är strikt funktionellt organiserat, som Museum aan den Stroom i Antwerpen på bilden.

RIGHT TO THE CITY – Yvonne P. Doderer

If urban space is understood not only in the sense of physical and built space but – following the French philosopher Henri Lefebvre – as societal, emancipatory, political and sociocritical space, movements like the feminist as well as the lgbtqi movement can be described and analyzed as a highly urban phenomenon. These movements contribute to the productivity of cities and to urban ways of living. An example is the "spatialization" of the feminist and lgbtqi-movement in German cities. Furthermore, the notion of a right to the city can be updated in the frame of gender studies and feminist practice: in consideration of the contemporary and global economical, societal and ecological developments, the demand of a right to the city is necessary more than ever and can function as an umbrella term for changes and a livable future.Yvonne P. Doderer is an architect, urban researcher and Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf. She runs the"Office of Transdisciplinary Research and Cultural Production" in Stuttgart and is internationally active as lecturer, author and producer mainly in the artistic field. Doderer studied architecture at the Technical University in Stuttgart.After the lecture, Thérèse Kristiansson will have a talk with Yvonne P. Doderer about a right to the city for livable futures.

Antón García-Abril, born in Madrid, 1969 is a European PhD Architect and associate professor in the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. In 2000 he establishes ENSAMBLE STUDIO. He has been invited professor at the M.I.T. in 2011. His office has been recently selected by SANAA to participate in the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. There is a constant research work in his projects which are exposed structures that explore the essence of materials to create space. The Music Studies Center and the SGAE Central Office in Santiago de Compostela, the Martemar House in Malaga, the Hemeroscopium House in Madrid and more recently The Truffle in Costa da Morte Spain.

Stan Allen is an American architect, theorist and dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University. He received a B.A. from Brown University, a B.Arch. from the Cooper Union and an M.Arch. from Princeton University and has worked in the offices of Richard Meier and Rafael Moneo. He was formerly the director, with landscape architect James Corner, of Field Operations. His practice, Stan Allen Architect, is based in Brooklyn.

Responding to the complexity of the modern city, Allen has developed an extensive catalogue of urbanistic strategies, in particular looking at field theory, landscape architecture and ecology as models to revitalize the practices of urban design. His urban projects have been published in Points and Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1999) and his theoretical essays in Practice: Architecture, Technique and Representation, published in 2000 by G+B Arts in their Critical Voices series. A revised edition of this book was published in 2009 by Routledge.

He lectures and publishes extensively, both in the U.S. and abroad, and participates in numerous international design conferences and symposia. In addition to design awards and competition prizes, Allen has been awarded Fellowships in Architecture from the New York Foundation for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts, a Design Arts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Graham Foundation Grant, and a President's Citation from The Cooper Union in 2002.Prior to his move to Princeton in 2002, Allen directed the AAD (Advanced Architectural Design) Program at Columbia University's GSAPP.

Martha Schwartz är landskapsarkitekt och konstnär med ett intresse för urbana projekt och utforskande av landskapets formgivning. Hon är professor vid Harvard University Graduate School of Design och driver kontoret Martha Schwartz Partners med kontor i USA och London. Hennes projekt har publicerats internationellt samt visats på utställningar på konstgallerier, och hon drivs av att finna lösningar där formgivningen av landskapet kan upphöjas till konst.

Kathryn Moore är professor vid Birmingham Institute of Art and Design och tidigare president för den brittiska organisationen för landskapsarkitektur, The Landscape Institute. Kathryn Moore har undervisat och publicerats inom ämnena designkvalité, teori och utbildning, och hennes forskning inom landskapsarkitektur har influerat utvecklingen inom arkitektur och stadsplanering, konst och design, utöver en påverkan inom områden som utbildning, filosofi och estetik.

Föreläsning 6. oktober: ARKITEKTUR UNDERIFRÅN – TYIN Tegnestue.

TORSDAG 111006  Kl 18.00. FFAR forum för arkitektur, Ringvägen 141.

I samband med en utställning av ASF/Arkitekter utan gränser i samarbete med FFAR forum för arkitektur hålls en föreläsning av det norska arkitektkontoret Tyin Tegnestue. Kontoret utvecklar projekt i utvecklingsländer som Thailand, Haiti och Uganda, och arbetar med att skapa arkitektoniska lösningar som följer behovet. Projekten involverar aktivt den lokala befolkningen under både design och byggnadsfaserna och bygger på ett utbyte av kunnande och hantverk, för att förbättra levnadsförhållanden för fattiga och utsatta genom arkitektur.

The film tells the story of Istanbul on a neo-liberal course to destruction. It follows the story of a migrant family from the demolition of their neighborhood to their on-going struggle for housing rights. The film takes a look at the city on a macro level and through the eyes of experts, going from the tops of mushrooming skyscrapers to the depths of the railway tunnel under the Bosphorous strait; from the historic neighborhoods in the south to the forests in the north. It's an Istanbul going from 15 million to 30 million. It's an Istanbul going from 2 million cars to 8 million. It's the Istanbul of the future that will soon engulf the entire region. It's an Istanbul you have never seen before.

SelgasCano består av José Selgas och Lucia Cano som båda tog examen vid ETSA Madrid 1992. Deras studios designforskning bygger främst på att analysera byggnaders miljöpåverkan. Deras arbeten förkroppsligar grundläggande principer som relationer till väderstreck, materialåtervinning och dialog med uterum och natur. De är publicerade i El Croquis, A + U, Architectural Record, Mark, RUM och On-Site med projekt som House in la Florida, Badajoz auditorium, Cartagena auditorium och kongresscenter samt deras eget kontor.

Inaba var tidigare ansvarig för forskningsprogrammet Project on the City vid Harvard tillsammans med Rem Koolhaas, och grundare av AMO, OMAs interna forskningsavdelning. Han har även undervisat vid UCLA, Harvard och SCI-Arc.

Richard Plunz: "New Urbanization Paradigms: Challenging Given Knowledge"Richard Plunz har undervisat vid Rensselaer och Pennsylvania State University och varit gästprofessor vi Katholieke Universiteit Leuven och Politecnico di Torino. Han var också ansvarig för avdelningen för arkitektur vid Columbia mellan 1977-1980 och har varit ledare för Urban Design programmet sedan 1992. Plunz forskning om arkitektur och stadsplanering i Italien, Turkiet och USA har fått stöd från bland andra Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, och JM Kaplan Fund. År 1991 mottog han Andrew J. Thomas Award från American Institute of Architects för sitt arbete med bostäder. Föreläsningen arrangeras av Bojan Boric / Urban Studio.

COMPETITION BRIEF

Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is pleased to invite students from around the world to take part in the CTBUH 2011 Student Design Competition: Why Tall?

It aims to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society from the perspectives of green, safety, and humanity.

Tall buildings are no longer just mere representations of modern cities; they are an integral part of our everyday life. They have expanded their role from providing space for commercial purposes to also include satisfying residential needs. They are fast becoming an important feat of human engineering, as they meet the growing demands of urban dwelling and reshaping the landscape of modern cities.

Now is the time to redefine the meaning and value of tall buildings in our modern society, by highlighting the aspects of green, safety, and humanity in tall buildings. In light of global climate change, public awareness of urban sustainability has forced designers to rethink and reinvent the role of the high-rise building type. They must contribute to the protection of endangered environments and offer sustainable alternatives to how cities operate.

Some of the multi-layered elements that participants should take into consideration include: the use of new materials, technologies, aesthetics, and novel spatial organizations, studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution. This is also an investigation on public and private space and the role of the individual and the collective in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community.

There are no restrictions on site, program or size, although the project should be based on a "real" site(s) in a real location. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to the participants in proposing imaginative design ideas for new constructions.

REGULATIONS

ú  The competition is open to all students who are registered at Universities.

ú  The official language of the competition is English.

ú  This is an anonymous competition and the registration number is the only means of identification.

ú  Contacting the Jury is prohibited.

ú  Entrants will be disqualified if any of the competition rules are not considered.

ú  Participation assumes acceptance of the regulations.

KEY DATES FOR THE COMPETITION

ú   Friday, April 1, 2011 – Competition announcement

ú   Friday, August 12, 2011 – Registration Deadline

ú   Wednesday, August 31, 2011 – Project submission deadline

ú   Friday, September 30, 2011 – Short-listed Finalists announced

ú   Tuesday, October 11, 2011 – Winners will be announced at the CTBUH 2011 World Conference in Seoul, Korea

PRIZES

ú  1 First Prize: US $5,000 and a certificate

ú  1 Second Prize: US $2,000 and a certificate

ú  1 Third Prize: US $1,000 and a certificate

ú  7 Honorable Mentions: Certificates

ú   Exhibition: Selected entries will be exhibited at the CTBUH 2011 World Conference in Seoul, Korea.

REGISTRATION
All university students are invited to participate in the design competition. Multidisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged.

ú   Participants must register FREE online to receive their registration number. http://competition.ctbuh.org

ú   All team members must submit proof of active student status. Email a scanned copy of your student ID or other verification to competition@ctbuh.org

ú   After your registration and student status has been approved, the CTBUH will issue you a registration number which will be necessary for the final submission.

ú   There is no limit as to the number of participants per team; however, each individual must be registered. Individual entries are accepted.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
This is a digital competition and no hardcopies are necessary. Entrants must submit their proposal via the CTBUH FTP no later than August 31, 2011 (23:00 hours US Eastern Time). FTP Login and password will be sent to you by email after you have successfully registered for the competition.

The project submission must contain the following files:

ú  One A0 board which includes: the project concept, diagrams, plans, sections, and perspectives.

1.    The board should be ISO A0 (1189mm x 841mm) in HORIZONTAL format. 

2.    The resolution of the board must be 150 dpi, RGB mode and saved as JPG file.

3.    Entry must contain your unique registration number in the upper right corner of the board (use Arial 18pt font). There should NOT be any names, affiliations or any other forms of identification on the board.

4.    The digital file must be named after the registration number. For example: CTBUH11-001.jpg.

ú  A .DOC file containing the project statement (A4 1-page).

1.    This .doc file must be named after the registration number followed by the word "statement". For example: CTBUH11-001-CONCEPT.doc.

ú  A .DOC file containing the entrants' personal information, including name, address, and email.

1.    This file must be named after the registration number followed by the word "NAME". For example: CTBUH11-001-NAME.doc.

ú  All the files must be placed in a ZIP folder named after your registration number. For example:  CTBUH11-001.zip

JUDGING CRITERIA

To assist with the judging process, a series of judging criteria is defined in four categories as outline below.

Creative Approach:

ú  The design response is innovative and inspirational

ú  The design responds to the environmental aspects of site

Response to site:

ú  The design responds to the physical aspects of site

ú  The design responds to the environmental aspects of site

Sustainability:

ú  The design considers the building's environmental impact and energy use

ú  The design considers social sustainability, occupant lifestyle and well-being

Functionality:

ú  Planning and building organization is clear and appropriate

ú  There is a clear structural, technical and constructional rationale

During the judging process, judges will be asked to take into consideration CTBUH Founder, Lynn Beedle's definition of a tall building as "a building in which 'tallness' strongly influences planning, design and use."

The CTBUH is the world's leading body in the field of tall buildings and the recognized source of information on tall buildings internationally. It is the arbiter of the criteria upon which tall building height is measured, and thus the title of "The World's Tallest Building" determined.
